4.30. entry £5, byo drink, tea and coffee available. for further information, please contact jo wild on 07834 594517 ........................................................................................................................................................ scarecrow competition for the village show, we're doing it again the scarecrow can be any theme, large or small as long as it is displayed outside your home from the 1st june. the show committee will arrange for all scarecrows to be photographed during june. therefore you must register your entry by emailing your name and address to [email protected] or completing an entry form from parbold diy or coffee etc by 1st june latest. this year a 'scarecrow map' will be produced and will be available from friday 15th june at the coffee etc cafe, library and the diy. judging will be by public vote and the map will contain a voting slip. all the photographs will be displayed in the show marquee. at the show the winner's trophy will be awarded, sponsored by coffee etc; your community cafe. ........................................................................................................................................................ lathom and parbold dry docks restoration project. the villages of lathom and parbold owe much of their growth and development to the leeds and liverpool canal. both villages had dry docks built at the time of the canal construction and both have a unique place in the history of the canal. the lathom dock is a listed structure within a local conservation area at the junction of the leeds and liverpool canal and the rufford branch. the parbold dock, although not a listed structure, is a major part of the canal history as it is the remainder of the original planned route of the canal, although this was later changed. both dry docks are in a sorry state these days and it is difficult for any visitors to understand or visualise their original purpose. the main aims of this joint project are to clean up both docks, removing overgrown vegetation, later non-original additions and providing historical and heritage information about the docks. the lathom dock is approximately half a mile east of burscough and parbold another 3 miles along the towpath. once the project is completed this will link both villages with a walk worth making, bringing more visitors into both villages and improving the environment for the local community. burscough heritage group and parbold heritage group are working together with the canal & river trust for this project. if you would like to be involved, become a member, volunteer or just keep up to date with events please give your contact to a group member or email us at one of the addresses below. burscough heritage group -
